Ulrich Schriewer (* 1949 in Haltern ) is a German visual artist .

biography

In search of new possibilities in art, Schriewer discovered sand in 1976 for his artistic expression. Since there was no processing method that was satisfactory for him at this point in time, he carried out various tests and experiments over the next two years, which led to the first form of his sand art technique. In the following years Ulrich Schriewer first made a name for himself regionally.

In the years 1989 to 1991 he developed his technique further so that large sculptures were also possible. In the same year that this innovation was completed, he received the honorary title of citizen of the Ruhr area from the Pro Ruhrgebiet association . In the years that followed, media attention grew. National and international exhibitions followed. In the meantime, his paintings and price designs are just as popular as his large sculptures.

style

Sculpture Zwilling-Les Jumeaux
Commissioned work by Kiep for the cultural award of the same name from the city of Haltern am See

The artist, also known as the father of sand art , creates abstract works, which are often supported by complementary flowing and solid elements.

The reduction to the essentials is often in the foreground in his works. The starting point in his work is always the person. As in ancient Greece, the color is essential in the implementation (for him as an element of joy and confidence). A decisive characteristic in his work is the ability to change things in such a way that they give the viewer space to discover and develop his own thoughts in the picture and in the sculpture. Changing, reducing or exaggerating in order to create “new visual spaces” is one of his statements.

The most important materials in his sculptures are sand and steel, in his paintings next to sand, metal parts and other materials.
