history

The place name Ulstrup is first documented in 1519. The ending - rup of the place name indicates a village . The "Ul" refers either to a person who was called Ulf or to the animal species " Wolf ". The meaning cannot be clearly determined from the word. The personal name "Ulf" is derived from the Old Norse word for wolf. The Danish word "ulv" still means "wolf" today. The community Wees, to which Ulstrup belongs today, assumes that the place name means "Wolfsdorf". Which probably has historical reasons. Centuries ago, when the north of the Cimbrian Peninsula was still more forested, the wolf was still native there. The various places in Denmark and southern Schleswig that jointly bear the name Ulstrup may be a reminder of this. In 1660, in the course of the Danish-Swedish War , the Polish allies brought numerous wolves with them to drive out the Swedes. Apparently quite a number of them were released. The wolves multiplied considerably. They ate the game and many in herds. As a result, ducal wolf hunts were organized in the Ulstrup area , in which the entire rural population apparently took part. In the 18th century the wolf was finally exterminated (cf. wolves in Germany ).

According to the earth book of 1685, the village of Ulstrup consisted of six full and three half hooves . For the year 1780 two cottages were also occupied. In 1828 the village consisted of 7 full hooves and one half hoof. A year later, a fire in the center of the village destroyed two of the hooves and half of the hooves. In 1951 there were around 500 people living in the Ulstrups municipality. In 1961 the Ulsturp parish merged with the Oxbüll parish to form one large parish . In 1961 the village of Ulstrup had 80 inhabitants. The land consolidation from 1961-1963 changed the closed village image. Five farm positions in the village were moved to open fields. In 1964 six new houses were built in the middle of the village. In 1970 the village of Ulstrup had 109 inhabitants.

  8. There is also evidence of a former wolf population from Dollerup , nine kilometers to the south-east . Ducal wolf hunts are said to have taken place there in the past, which is why the Dollerup community has the wolf in its coat of arms.
