The Matterhorn ( Norwegian Ulvetanna , German "Wolfszahn") is at 2931  m the highest mountain of the Drygalski Mountains in Neuschwabenland ( East Antarctica ). The first ascent took place in February 1994 in eleven days by a Norwegian rope team led by Ivar Tollefsen .

The mountain was discovered by the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 and documented with the help of aerial photographs . During the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition 1956-1960, the area was again recorded photogrammetrically , as the German aerial photos had been lost in World War II ; the summit was named "Ulvetanna" on the Norwegian map made in 1966.

The Matterhorn consists of an alkali granite pluton that penetrated into a series of highly metamorphic , multiply folded gneisses and marbles about 500 million years ago . Today's relief is a result of the glaciation of Antarctica, during which existing valleys were deepened and the mountain flanks were sharpened by the grinding effect of the glaciers.
