Ulysses Livingston

Ulysses Livingston (born January 29, 1912 in Bristol (Tennessee) , † October 7, 1988 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz guitarist (also electric bass , vocals ) of swing .

Livingston played in the band at West Virginia State College , played with Horace Henderson and toured in variety shows. From the mid-1930s he played with Lil Armstrong , Frankie Newton , Sammy Price , Coleman Hawkins and in 1938/39 with Benny Carter . He moved to New York and accompanied Ella Fitzgerald from 1940 to 1942 . After a short time in the military, he played on the west coast of the USA from 1943 . He sang with the Spirits of Rhythm and led his own band ( Four Blazes ). In 1947 he played with Cee Pee Johnson in Hawaii . In the 1950s he worked as a freelance musician with West Coast jazz musicians , as a studio musician and became a record producer. From the 1970s he also played the electric bass.

Tom Lord's discography lists 74 recordings from 1939 to 1971, on which Livingston participated. He has recorded with Pete Johnson , Frankie Newton, Benny Carter, the Varsity Seven, Billie Holiday , Ella Fitzgerald, Illinois Jacquet , Rex Stewart , Joe Sullivan , Nellie Lutcher , Jazz at the Philharmonic and various rhythm and blues groups.
