Ulysses von Salis (* July 23, 1594 - † February 3, 1674 in Igis ) was a Graubünden officer in the French service, later Mayor of the Court of the Four Villages .

Life

Ulysses of Salis was the third son of Hercules of Salis. In 1606 Ulysses accompanied two older brothers to study in Heidelberg. After stays in Paris and Orléans, he was a page in the service of the Duke of Bouillon until 1611 .

After 1616, during the turmoil in Graubünden , he was a captain in the Venetian-French service. From 1621 to 1622 he was a major sergeant in the army of Peter Ernst II von Mansfeld . In 1624 he served as a lieutenant colonel in his brother Rudolf's French regiment. After his death in 1625 it was given to him, but dissolved in 1627.

As compensation, von Salis received a company from the French Swiss Guard . From 1631 he led a Graubünden regiment as a colonel, with whom he participated in the successful Veltliner campaign of Duke Henri de Rohan from 1635 to 1637. After Rohan's departure, von Salis remained one of the few Graubünden officers to continue in French service.

In 1633 von Salis bought the ruins of Marschlins Castle, expanded them into a castle and bought surrounding goods. In 1641 he was promoted to Maréchal de camp . 1643, after further campaigns in the service of the French King Louis XIII. , he settled on Marschlins after 27 years of military service and called himself von Salis-Marschlins from then on. As a result, von Salis became one of the most influential personalities in the Three Leagues . On the Court of Schiers he settled federal land Amman of the Ten Jurisdictions Federal select and called again as leader of the French party strengthened the buyout of Austrian rights Zehngerichtebund and in the Lower Engadine . From Salis was Landammann of the Court of the Four Villages and from 1646 to 1647 was Landammann of the Ten Courts Association. This version was sponsored by Ulysses' last descendant, the women's rights activist Meta von Salis .

After five years of severe gout, Ulysses von Salis died at the age of almost 80 in Marschlins. He was buried in the parish church of Igis. He was married to Violanta von Salis, the daughter of Johann Baptista. As the father of his sons Hercules and Johann Baptist, he became the progenitor of the Salis-Marschlins line.
