Umzimkhulu ( English Umzimkhulu Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of Harry Gwala , KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the municipality is the city of the same name, Umzimkhulu . The congregation is currently chaired by Mphuthumi Mpabanga.

The name Umzimkhulu comes from the isiZulu - and isiXhosa - word for "big house".

The parish has only been part of the Harry Gwala district since the beginning of 2006 . Until then, Umzimkhulu belonged to the Eastern Cape . This restructuring brought with it some difficulties in terms of infrastructure, as the population in the district almost doubled as a result of the incorporation.

The parish is located in the historic region of Griqualand East . It is surrounded by the Umzimkhulu rivers in the south and the Umkhomazi in the north. In the vicinity are the cities of Ixopo in the east, Underberg in the north , Matatiele in the west and Kokstad and Harding in the south .
