occupation

Una colt in mano al diavolo is a spaghetti western by Gianfranco Baldanello from 1973.

action

Jeremy Scott, called Sulky, once saved the life of young Roy Koster. Released from several years of forced labor, Roy is now returning to Silvertown to assist Sulky. After false testimony by kitchen boy Sam Dayton and saloon owner Isaac McCorney, he was found guilty of robbery and murder and sentenced to life in prison. Both men were apparently acting on the orders of the wealthy Warner. Although Roy is suggested to leave town, he stays. He kills Sam and eventually finds out that the plot against Sulky was McCorney's. Meanwhile, Warner tries to get Roy out of the way as a murderer. Sulky's two children, Grace and Phil, rush to help Roy. They manage to get a McCorney document into their hands that proves Sulky's innocence. They can also free Sulky from prison. McCorney flees, but is caught by Roy and defeated in a showdown.

criticism

Christian Keßler notes that the old motif of the outsider who interferes in the smear of the townspeople is not new, but the story is told in an appealing and exciting way. He particularly praises the successful finale. The Segnalazioni Cinematografiche were less enthusiastic, attesting that the “Giallo in outdated Western conventions” only had “modest effectiveness”.

production

The title Una colt in mano al diavolo is an allusion to Sergio Bergonzelli's Una colt in pugno al diavolo ( Pronto, Amigo (A colt in the hand of the devil) ) published in 1967.

After On Your Knees, Django, it was the second collaboration between director Gianfranco Baldanello and leading actor Robert Woods. The film opened in Italian cinemas on January 5, 1973. An evaluation on the German film market is still pending (as of 11/2014).
