The Undine is a German gaff schooner with a steel hull.

history

The Undine was built in 1931 at the Dutch shipyard Gebr. Niestern & Co in Delfzijl with hull number 189 as Franziska and operated as a cargo ship in the North and Baltic Seas . Before the takeover by the Navy in World War II as X 2542, the ship sailed for the shipping company Franz Werner, Tornesch.

In 1948 the ship was rebuilt. The hull was lengthened by 5.75 meters, increasing the load capacity from 150 to 200 tons, and the rigging was removed. Until 1980 the ship was used as a motorized cargo ship in coastal travel.

In the years 1980–1984 the ship was restored. It got a rigging again and the hull was shortened to the old size. Until 2009 the ship was used for social youth work, with the cargo transport serving as an educational tool. From 2013 she earned her living in the cargo service and operated the liner service between Hamburg and Sylt for the sailing company Kapitän Hass from Sonwik in Flensburg . In addition, tramp trips were undertaken throughout Europe. A small extra income brought up to eight passengers who were able to experience the cargo transports on board during the liner service. Due to financial problems, the operator filed for bankruptcy, and Undine was part of the bankruptcy estate .

In May 2017 the Hamburg Maritime Foundation bought the ship in order to keep it as a museum ship.
