The Hungary-sage ( Salvia Aethiopis ), also Hungarian sage or Moors Sage called, is a plant of the genus sage ( Salvia ) in the family of the mint (Lamiaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The Hungarian sage grows as a biennial to perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 20 to 80 centimeters. It grows with leaf rosettes lying flat on the ground. The leaves are hairy white woolly.

Generative characteristics

Flowering plant specimens are only branched upwards and form a broadly spreading, pyramidal inflorescence. The bracts of the whorls are herbaceous and at least the upper ones have a membranous and purple border. The bracts are at most as long as the calyx, this is covered with thorny tips. The bracts are shorter than the white crown .

The hermaphroditic flowers are zygomorphic and countless with a double flower envelope .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22 or 24.

Occurrence

Salvia aethiopis is widespread in Southeast Europe and Southwest Asia to Central Asia and is a neophyte in Central Europe .

Salvia aethiopis grows on xerothermal lawns and ruderal areas and prefers moderately dry soils in warm locations. It occurs in plant communities of the order Sisymbrietalia.
