Unicode block special

The Unicode block Special (engl. Specials, U + U + FFF0 to FFFD) contains specific control and additional characters for the Unicode system, including control characters for comments .

The previously unoccupied code points U + FFF0 to U + FFF8 are reserved for future formatting characters.

The characters U + FFF9, U + FFFA and U + FFFB make it possible to insert comments into the text, which are often displayed above the annotated text. They make it possible, for example, to identify Furigana symbols as such. U + FFF9 introduces the text to be annotated, U + FFFA separates it from the following annotation and U + FFFB marks the end of the annotation.

The last two code points U + FFFE and U + FFFF of level 0 no longer belong to this block, because they are classified as "Not a Character" because no Unicode characters can be encoded there. These byte sequences are used together with the character U + FEFF ( Byte Order Mark ) in order to recognize the byte order in UTF-16 and UTF-32 coded texts.
