Uniform (armed forces)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The uniforms of the Austrian Armed Forces are regulated in the Service Regulations for the Armed Forces - Suit Regulations (DVBH Suit Regulations) .

Uniforms are one of the external characteristics prescribed by international martial law, which distinguish combatants from non-combatants . In addition, uniforms are used to dress soldiers as appropriately as possible according to their different tasks. There are also different types of uniform.

Types of suit

"MultiCam Austria" camouflage suit since 2019

A few months late - the introduction was already announced for mid-2018 - a new service and combat suit was introduced in March 2019 by the Heeresbekleidungsanstalt in Brunn am Gebirge , a six-color "MultiCam Austria" camouflage pattern that was developed by the army . The standard pattern is matched to the surrounding colors in Austria. If necessary, it can also be purchased in the color versions for "desert" and "winter". The conversion to the combat suit, initially only known as "new camouflage suit", was started at Jägerbataillon 18 and Milit-Jägerbataillon Burgenland and continued in 2020 at Panzergrenadierbataillon 13 should be completed by 2023 at the latest. Every year 3,000 to 4,000 soldiers are to be equipped with the new uniforms and the 03 combat uniform is to be completely replaced.

Suit 75

The suit 75, introduced in 1975, is intended as a service suit, for service within the barracks, as an exit suit and for field service. The olive green (RAL 7013) “Suit 75” with field shirt and field jacket (in cool weather) is still widespread. Since 1992 the olive-green nationality badge with the inscription "AUSTRIA - BUNDESHEER" has been attached to the left upper sleeve. The field cap, beret or aviator hat and the warming plush cap (the latter with ear protection) serve as headgear . Low shoes can be worn in the office instead of boots. For the exit, medal clasps or full decorations can be worn.

Suit 03

Suit 03 is a heavily revised and partly completely redeveloped form of the previous suit 75 with changes in cut and design, but the “classic” brown-gray ( RAL 7013 ) from suit 75 has been retained as the color . In addition, a large part of the remaining equipment is replaced with the combat suit 03, e.g. B. Backpack, new Kevlar helmet (introduced in 2016), new modular carrying system with combat vest instead of the previous belt carrying frame of the combat suit 75 (traditionally referred to as “carrying frame” in the armed forces). However, with the 03 suit, a belt carrying frame can be made from the hip belt together with the "hip belt carrier".

The changes to the Kaz03 uniform consist of:

  • improved materials, etc. a. More breathable and water-repellent fabric than the old suit 75, fabric made of ripstop
  • Suit 03 no longer has epaulettes, instead only a rank badge is worn in front of the chest.
  • Greater comfort and freedom of movement thanks to the modified uniform cut
  • Velcro surfaces on both upper arms: the nationality badge is still worn on the left (no longer sewn on, but as a patch with Velcro on the back), on the right the badge of the own unit. Additional badges for training such as B. Heeresbergführer , Army ski instructor, hand-to-hand combat or parachute training are carried on the chest or breast pockets as before (sometimes as Velcro patches, but additional Velcro surfaces must be sewn on).

Service suit 03

The service suit 03 is intended purely for the back office and consists almost entirely of the old suit 75, but the old field cap of suit 75 has been replaced by the new combat suit cap of suit 03. In most barracks, however, the 03 combat uniform is also increasingly worn in the office.

Combat suit 03

The combat suit 03 basically consists of the light field cap (official name for combat suit 03: "combat suit cap"), light field trousers, an olive green T-shirt as an undershirt and light field jacket. In addition, new wet and cold protective clothing was introduced in the style of Suit 03. The kevlar helmet introduced in 1994 by MSA Safety Incorporated is currently still used as a combat helmet , but since 2016 it has been replaced by the Sentry XP Mid Cut helmet from Ops Core Inc. from Boston. The latter is significantly lighter than the previous Kevlar helmet and offers various mounting options for equipment such as B. night vision goggles , headsets or protective visors , in addition, the inner padding of the helmet can be better adapted to the individual head shape.

The field shoes were retained, light and heavy (informally in the armed forces also referred to as “one” or “two-man”), the beret in different colors depending on the type of weapon (see below). In addition, instead of a beret, members of the air force continue to wear the previous brown-gray aviator's hat (" little boat ") and members of the 6th Jäger Brigade wear an edelweiss made of metal on the left side of the combat suit cap.

Currently (as of 2017) a buttonless gray short-sleeved shirt is being introduced as an alternative to the field jacket. The cut is more like a tunic than a "classic" shirt such as B. the field shirt of suit 75.

Various modules are created for service in the field ("Kaz" = "combat suit"):

  • Kaz03 / 1: hip belt with hip belt straps. This roughly corresponds to the former “ supporting structure ” of the armed forces, but the hip belt carrier no longer serves as a shoulder strap for the backpack as is the case with the belt carrying frame of the combat suit 75.
  • Kaz03 / 2: Hip belt connected to combat vest and equipment mounted on it (magazine, hand grenade and / or outer pockets). The newly introduced outer pockets (large, medium and small) can optionally either be attached to the back as a kind of rucksack or to the hip belt (e.g. on the side as a drop pouch , e.g. to quickly store empty magazines) middle outer pocket the previous pocket for the NBC protective mask.
  • Kaz03 / 3: For use up to approx. 24 hours, the Kaz03 / 1 or 2 is expanded to include a backpack
  • Kaz03 / 4: For operations over 24 hours, basically the same as the Kaz03 / 3, but with additional clothing / equipment in the backpack (sleeping bag, toilet bag, etc.)
  • Kaz03 / 5: Basically the same as the Kaz03 / 4, the rest of the clothing and equipment is packed in the newly introduced bag .

Gray suit ("A-set")

The starting or company uniform is called “gray suit” and has been issued in unchanged form since 1965. It is also often called the "A set". It consists of a field gray uniform skirt, stone gray (formerly: iron gray ) suit trousers, black low shoes and a plate cap, mountain cap, aviator hat or beret (the latter two only if no full decoration is worn).

Members of the cadre of sergeants and above take a custom-made set. In general, no gray suit is issued to military servants and batches . However, it can be written out if necessary.

  • The uniform skirt : Three types of buttons are in use: Officers wear gold-colored buttons with a smooth edge, a matt-brushed background and an embossed stylized federal eagle. NCOs the same, but silver. The buttons of the batches and recruits, on the other hand, are gray with a smooth edge and a finely grained inner surface. Officers wear a buttoned clasp made of gold-colored braid on the left shoulder of their uniform; In the case of non-commissioned officers, the clasp is silver-colored, in the case of the staff non-commissioned officer (MBUO1 / MZUO1) it is mottled with gold and silver. Neither fabric belts nor waist straps are allowed with “Suit 65”.
  • The uniform trousers : They are stone-gray pleated trousers with passepoillings in the color of the armed forces.

Exit suit / large service suit

The exit suit consists of a gray suit and a gray uniform shirt. In summer you can do without a uniform skirt and wear a short-sleeved shirt without a tie inside the barracks. When full decoration is worn, it is referred to as a "large service suit" . It is mainly worn in the office.

Formal suit / large formal suit

The formal suit consists of a gray suit and a white shirt. It is intended for evening, social events, balls and special personal occasions such as graduation or weddings. When full decoration is worn, it is referred to as a "large formal suit " . As such, it is equivalent to a civilian tuxedo or tailcoat.

Suit white

The white uniform skirt is a specialty. The officers were initially authorized to wear it, and since 1980 the NCOs as well. The white skirt is to be procured at your own expense, but can be compensated for by maintaining it. Initially only intended for the summer semester and for official military events, it has been allowed to be used all year round since 1977. It is now common to wear it at civil events such as the Vienna Opera Ball . In 1986 the matching uniform trousers in black and blue were introduced. Instead of the passepoilling, the pants are equipped with a dark blue tuxedo band. Instead of trousers, female soldiers wear a dark blue evening dress and a skirt in the style of a Spencer jacket.

Depending on the type of decoration, it is referred to as "white dress suit " (medal clasp) or "white dress suit " (full decoration).

Parade suit

The parade suit of the military academy differs from the guard in that it does not wear the shoulder cord. The military academics (ensigns) also wear the StG 58. Only the helmet is worn as headgear. The uniform coat is worn in appropriate weather conditions.

In the mid-2000s, the mountain cap was introduced for the 6th Jäger Brigade . It is kept gray and its cut and function is based on the hats of the Austro-Hungarian Army and the First Republic. It has a black lacquer umbrella and two buttons in silver (NCOs) or gold (officers) and the corresponding rose cap above. On the left is the traditional edelweiss on a green background. It is worn as an alternative to the plate cap but also to the 03 suit at public events.
