The Josip Juraj Strossmayer University Osijek ( Croatian : Sveučilište JJ Strossmayera u Osijeku ) is a Croatian state university in Osijek .

Rectorate of Osijek University

The university is located with the main building, the rectorate and the agricultural faculty in the historical center of the fourth largest city in Croatia , the other faculties are spread across the city ( Tvrda , Drava , Gaj-Campus ). From 1977 to 2000, 8,810 students enrolled in the university.

In 1999, teacher training and pre-school education were removed from the university's program. On September 29, 1999, the Pedagogical University changed its name to the Philosophical Faculty.

The university has four floors. The administration, the lecture halls, the student canteen and the printing shop are located on the first floor. The oldest book in the library is from 1767 and is called Nova Slavonska i Nimacska Gramatika (The New Slavonian and German Grammar) by Mathiam Antonium Relkovich . The university library, together with the faculty libraries, has a total of over 550,000 volumes.

history

The university was founded in Osijek in 1975. It has a long history as its teacher training has a long tradition. This tradition goes back to the years 1707 and 1724. At that time there were only two higher education institutions in Osijek , namely philosophy and theology .

The Strossmayer University has also changed its name several times. It is also known as the Pedagogical University because it has continued the tradition of the teacher training institute and the pedagogical academy. In the Pedagogical Academy, teachers were trained to work in primary schools. It was not until the 1970s that teachers were also trained for middle school classes.

Construction began in 1894 and ended in 1895. The construction company was O. Priester und Deutsch from Zagreb and the university building was initially intended for the elementary school. The Strossmayer University is not only a university, but also an important cultural asset of the city of Osijek.

It is named after the Catholic theologian and politician Josip Juraj Strossmayer (1815–1905), who was born in Osijek .
