occupation

Until Death is an American thriller from 2007 . The main role of Anthony Stowe was played by the Belgian actor and martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme .

action

Anthony Stowe serves as a drug detective for the New Orleans Police Department in Louisiana . However, because of his excessive alcohol consumption, his superiors see him as a security risk - and he is involved in corrupt machinations. It is also suspected that he probably also uses drugs other than alcohol, for which no evidence can initially be found.

In the private sphere, Stowe has been in a crisis for a long time, and his wife is seriously considering a divorce.

His ex-partner Callahan has risen to become one of the most powerful gang bosses in New Orleans . Two colleagues from Stowe are shot dead during a failed undercover mission. Stowe's other colleagues blame him solely for the failed operation. In the period that followed, he became more and more addicted to alcohol and took up hard drugs: he injected himself with heroin . One evening he is lured into an ambush by a friend. Stowe is able to take out some of Callahan's men, but is ultimately overwhelmed and almost executed with a headshot. He is admitted to the hospital half-dead and the bullet is removed from his skull in an operation lasting several hours. However, Stowe falls into a deep coma after the emergency surgery and his chances of full recovery are close to zero percent.

Callahan, meanwhile, assumes that he has finally eliminated Stowe, and so he mercilessly continues his series of murders on competitors of the milieu. Six months later, Anthony suddenly woke up during a routine check-up by a male nurse. Further rehabilitation is initiated immediately , in which he quickly makes great progress. Driven by only one thought, namely revenge on his tormentors, he also decides to lead a better life from now on - of course without alcohol and other drugs . In addition, the old feelings for his wife are awakening again and he tries to rebuild a relationship with his wife. But it's a pretty rocky road and their relationship is initially quite difficult.

After he is more or less on his feet again, he goes to his old job in the police station and asks his former chief to re-employ him and reinstate him in his old job. Since, during his absence after the assassination, while cleaning up his desk, a used drug set that was clearly attributable to Stowe was found, his chief won't let him go back to his old job. Left to his own devices and rather frustrated with this process, Stowe now begins the hunt for Callahan single-handedly.

However, Callahan's men kidnap Stowe's pregnant wife and take her to an empty warehouse. Meanwhile, Anthony is brought to this warehouse by a Callahan's thug. Later there is a showdown - at the end of which Stowe and Callahan shoot each other. In the last scene of the film, Valerie Stowe and her young daughter can be seen reverently visiting Anthony's grave.

background

The previous two action films ( The Hard Corps , Second in Command ) by Jean-Claude Van Damme are not necessarily considered the big highlights of his film career and were more of a testimony to the fact that the Belgian action superstar (he had his most successful period since the middle of 1980s to the end of the 1990s) will probably only be considered for B-movies . With Until Death , Jean-Claude Van Damme wanted to go back to his better times.

Reviews

“The tough, largely entertaining action film offers its aged leading actor an attractive platform. Stephen Rea is convincing in the role of the villain. "
