action

In a possible near future, Gray Trace is a slightly old-fashioned guy who restores cars. He has taken on an assignment from Eron Keen, owner of a renowned technology company called Vessel. When the vehicle is handed over, Trace takes his wife Asha with him because he cannot handle her self-driving vehicle and wants to show her Keen's impressive house. Asha is employed by a competing technology company called Cobolt. Keen shows the two of his hitherto unknown and most important invention. An artificial intelligence called STEM, which is supposed to support the human brain in the form of a microchip.

On the way home, Asha's self-driving car malfunctions, throwing her off the route and leading her to a neglected area. There they are ambushed by several unidentified people, killing Asha and paralyzing Gray from the neck down. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Keen visits Trace in the hospital and offers him to implement the chip on him so that he can walk again. Trace accepts and has an operation at Keen's house. The operation is successful and Trace can move his entire body again after a short time. However, Trace must then sign a confidentiality agreement regarding the existence of the implant.

Upon arrival at home, to Trace's surprise, STEM starts talking to him. STEM gives Trace information about the murder of his wife Asha and about the possible perpetrators, who have not yet been identified by the police despite drone recordings. In addition, STEM Trace gives recommendations on how to proceed with Trace. So Trace seeks out those involved in the murder of his wife one after the other and has them killed by STEM, which turns Trace into an efficient killer as soon as Trace gives STEM full control over the control of his body. In the course of this, however, Trace developed a conflict of conscience in this regard. In addition, the investigator Cortez is ever closer to his heels. When Keen tries to shut down STEM remotely, STEM sends Trace to a hacker who is supposed to overwrite the code in order to free himself from Keen control.

After this has been successful, STEM shows its true colors. It can no longer be controlled by Trace and takes full control of Trace's movements. STEM intends to turn off its creator so that it cannot develop further chips of this form. The two and Cortez showdown at Keen's house. Keen reveals to Trace that STEM planned all of this from the start and actually controls him and his company. Trace tries to fight against STEM and shoot himself, but he does not succeed. STEM transports him into a dream world in which he wakes up in the hospital and is no longer paraplegic; His wife Asha lives in this dream world and tells him that they both had an accident and that he was in a coma for several days. In the real world, however, STEM has completely taken control of Trace's body and kills Keen and Cortez. STEM is visibly satisfied with his new body and the experiences he can now have with it.
