Urban Discipline (exhibitions)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Urban Discipline is a series of three exhibitions on the subject of graffiti and street art that took place in Hamburg from 2000 to 2002 as part of the Maximum HipHop days . The exhibitions were organized and carried out by the getting-up studio community .

history

It was important to the organizers to fight for its establishment as an art form at a time when graffiti and street art were no longer just scribble, but were still not really taken seriously.

“We had the discussion about whether graffiti is art in a very extreme way at the Urban Discipline in 2002 at the latest . That was also a reason to organize these exhibitions. We wanted to create a forum and discuss how graffiti changes when it comes on the canvas or when it is exhibited. Ultimately, it cannot be defined universally. But it came out quite clearly - and that was actually always my opinion - that graffiti cannot automatically be art. [...] Art has to be defined by something other than just technology "

- Mirko Reisser in: DAIM - the professional. Backspin magazine. No. 95, July – August 2008, p. 5.

Importance and participants

The Urban Discipline is one of the world's most important exhibitions for graffiti and street art. Os Gêmeos spoke of a great project in interviews. Urban Discipline was one of the first and still largest exhibitions of this kind ever held, which also helped artists like Daniel Man and Banksy to take an important career step.

The British street artist Banksy sprayed the Urban Discipline exhibition in Germany for the first time ever. At the same time, works were also created in Hamburg's urban space.

Other participating artists included Os Gêmeos , Nina Pandolfo , Herbert Baglione , Vitché , Loomit , DAIM , Seen , Martha Cooper , Seak , Dare , Won ABC , Tasek , André , Stohead and Daddy Cool .

Exhibitions

International stars of the scene came to Hamburg for the first exhibition in 2000 in the Alte I-Punkt skate hall . The most important representatives of the international graffiti and street art scene then met again next year. In 2001, artists from Brazil, New York, Germany, Austria, France, the USA and Switzerland exhibited in the Alte Postortierhalle on Stephansplatz in Hamburg. In 2002, 34 international artists from all over the world came together to exhibit on around 1,700 square meters in the Astra halls in the Hamburg district of St. Pauli. A self-published catalog was published for each exhibition.

  5. Os Gemeos in an interview. Kirchner, Marc, April 9, 2010, accessed on July 1, 2013 : “Yes, this exhibition was very important for us. And we are still very grateful for this opportunity back then. There, too, we got to know a lot of interesting writers from Germany and all over Europe. Thanks to DAIM , Tasek , Daddy Cool , Stohead and many others who worked really hard for it. We know that, it was a feat to make it all possible. Everything went very well, everyone helped everyone, no competition among each other, it was really a very good atmosphere. It was nice to be able to make our contribution and to be able to show a piece of Brazilian graffiti as part of the exhibition. We noticed very quickly that many did not even know that there was graffiti in Brazil, let alone something of life here. Some of them didn't understand our work at all back then. We still have a lot of respect for what happened in Hamburg back then. A great project with a great story behind it. Urban Discipline has actually been one of the first and still largest gallery exhibitions that have combined graffiti art, style and a professional presentation perfectly and successfully. For many this event was an important step for more, Daniel Man , DAIM and also Banksy! "
