Uri Rubin (born 1944 in Kirjat Ono , Israel ) is an Israeli Islamic scholar and university professor .

Live and act

Uri Rubin was born in Kirjat Ono , Israel, in 1944 . After a first degree in the history of the Middle East and Tanakh , which he completed with a bachelor's degree, he studied Arabic studies with Meir Jacob Kister at Tel Aviv University and received his doctorate with him in 1975 with a thesis on Mohammed , with a special focus on his eschatology World of thought.

Rubin is professor emeritus at the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Tel Aviv University. He researches early Islam (with a special focus on the Koran ), Koran exegesis ( tafsīr ) and the early Islamic tradition ( sīra and ḥadīṯ ). The aim of his research is to present the worldview of the first Muslims in comparison to the pre-Islamic past Jāhilīya , taking into account the Koran and non-Koran religious and historiographical literature. He also researches the status of Jerusalem (including the Dome of the Rock ) in the early days of Islam, compared to Mecca and the Kaaba . He has translated various works from Arabic into Hebrew ; his Hebrew translation of the Koran was published in 2005. He is the author and editor of various works, as well as contributing to the Encyclopaedia of Islam and other specialist works. He was assistant editor on the editorial board of the Encyclopaedia of the Qurʾān .
