history

In 1410, the then Bishop of Brixen, Ulrich von Wien, allowed the construction of a chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity at the end of the moat . In 1427 it was expanded to become the so-called New Church, although the tower in its current shape was only added in the second half of the 15th century. At that time the church tower was integrated into the city wall of Bruneck. A tower guard overlooked the city from his battlements. In November 1500, Emperor Maximilian I stayed in Bruneck and gave the Neukirche a necklace with the Order of the Golden Fleece as a gift.

The settlement of the Order of the Ursulines initially met with resistance from the city council. Finally, Prince-Bishop Kaspar Ignaz von Künigl made the new church and the ball court available to the order. The Ursulines came to the city in 1741 and initially moved into their accommodation in Palais Sternbach. In 1745 they were able to move into the newly built monastery building by the church and start their school operations. The first superior was Christina von Peisser. In 1760 the monastery buildings along the moat were also completed. In 1908 a new school building had to be built due to a lack of space. Up until the time of fascism, the order was responsible for running the girls' school ; from 1925 it is state.

The Gothic Neukirche was with the takeover by the Ursulinen Baroque ; In 1880 the regotization took place.

Building description

The Ursuline Church at Tschurtschenthalerpark is structurally integrated with its two long sides into the monastery buildings, which extend from the moat over the Tschurtschenthalerpark to the Stadtgasse . Visible from the street is the western front with the pointed arch portal and the Wimperg above , to which brick steps lead up. Next to the entrance is a memorial plaque commemorating Emperor Maximilian I. The polygonal end of the choir can only be seen from the cloister courtyard.

The lateral pointed tower made of granite blocks has a closed battlement all around ; Key notches are placed in the wall .

The single nave nave is separated from the choir by three steps and has a star rib vault. The neo-Gothic altar uses three reliefs from the original Gothic winged altar of the New Church from 1430. They depict the scenes of the Visitation of the Virgin , the sacrifice in the temple and the adoration of the kings . Another relief with the death of Mary was placed separately on a pedestal in the choir room because of its size. The unknown artist is known as the Ursuline Master or Master of the Ursuline Church. On the steps of the choir is a statue of the Madonna of the Gardener AE Insam, modeled on the miraculous image of Großgmain . The baroque crucifix by Johann Georg Silly (around 1750) is surrounded by pictures of the Stations of the Cross of Maria Stade from 1880. A panel in the nave by Johann Mitterwurzer from the 18th century shows the founder of the order Angela Merici , another panel by Karl Henrici depicts Saint Ursula .

The church has a crypt .
