The Usola or Ussola ( Russian Узола or Усола ) is a 147 km long left tributary of the Volga in the European part of Russia .
description
The Usola rises in the northwest of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast not far from the village of Romanowo . From there it flows mainly in a southerly direction through the wooded west of the oblast, past the district administrative center of Kowernino . Across from Balachna , it then reaches the Volga.
The Usola is between 5 and 10 m wide in the upper reaches and between 20 and 30 m in the lower reaches. The river is not navigable due to its shallow depth of 0.8 to 1.5 m and numerous shoals, but is very popular with canoeists. The Usola is mainly fed by snowmelt and is frozen between November and April on average.
