Uster Ling is a district of Landau an der Isar in the district Höcking in Dingolfing-Landau in Bavaria . The church village lies a few meters above the right bank of the Isar and is touched by the Isar cycle path .

Until 1971 the place belonged to the independent municipality Niederhöcking in the district of Dingolfing-Landau , which was initially united with Oberhöcking to the municipality Höcking and in 1978 it was incorporated into Landau. But there is no settlement connection with Landau, so that the place has retained its village character and the incorporation is purely administrative.

In the small Lower Bavarian village with (August 2006) 76 inhabitants there is no tavern or grocery store any more. A carpenter's shop and an agricultural machinery business are the only businesses. After the inn was closed, social life has partially shifted to the outside world, so Usterling shares the fate of many other small towns. Since there is hardly any building land, the population of Usterling is tending to decline. At the last census on May 25, 1987, there were still 120 inhabitants in 24 buildings or 25 apartments.

The Usterling volunteer fire brigade , which shares a fire station with the Zulling volunteer fire brigade , provides fire protection and is the main organizer of traditional celebrations and other social events.

The village belongs to the parish of St. Martin in Höcking with its branch church St. Johannes and the chapel of the same name near the Johannisfelsen .

history

The village probably got its name from a homestead of those in Usterlingen who were closely connected to the city of Landau. Early Celtic settlements were recognized by aerial archeology ; the finds were not followed up.

Attractions

Usterling is best known for its growing rock (also known as "Johannisfelsen"), a stone water channel , which in this form represents a natural monument that is unique in Europe. The dissolved lime has been deposited for thousands of years and forms a wall of tufa several meters high . The belief in a healing power in water is probably the reason why this natural monument, which is unique in its size, has survived the ages.

Another attraction is the late Gothic village church of St. John, built around 1500, with an impressive late Gothic winged altar in a fully restored condition. The extremely rich structure above the shrine shows John the Baptist and John the Evangelist as the main characters, the masterful carvings on the altar wings depicting scenes from the lives of the saints. On one of the altarpieces, the baptism of Christ on the "growing rock" is depicted as a cultural and historical curiosity.
