Ute Verstegen

Ute Verstegen (* 1970 in Stuttgart ) is a German Christian archaeologist .

Life and accomplishments

Ute Verstegen studied art history , classical archeology , prehistory and early history as well as theater , film and television studies between 1989 and 1998 , as well as late antiquity and Christian archeology at the universities of Cologne , Bonn and Barcelona . During her studies, she also did internships in the areas of monument preservation and took part in archaeological excavations . In 1993 she participated in the organization of the exhibition Antike Gemmen in Cologne and from Xanten at the University and City Library of Cologne and was also an intern at the Research Archive for Ancient Sculpture of the Archaeological Institute of the University of Cologne in 1993/94 . In January she completed her studies with Günther Binding and Udo Mainzer with a master's degree , the subject of the thesis was A research report on St. Gereon in Cologne in Roman and early medieval times .

From 1996 to 1998, Verstegen was a doctoral scholarship holder of the Roman-Germanic Museum Cologne, holder of a travel grant from the Archeology Foundation in Cologne and was an associate member of the Graduate School Formation and Self-Presentation of Urban Elites in the Provinces of the Roman Empire at the University of Cologne. She completed her studies with a doctorate under Günther Binding and Hansgerd Hellenkemper , the subject of the dissertation was St. Gereon in Cologne in Roman and early medieval times . The work was awarded the Cologne Prize of the Senate and the Board of Trustees of the University of Cologne in 1999 and in 2006 by the Offermann-Hergarten Foundation at the University of Cologne. From mid-1998 to the end of 1999, Verstegen was a postdoctoral fellow in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . During this time she took part in a study course at the Bibliotheca Hertziana on the subject of the 'Gesamtkunstwerk' with Bernini, Borromini and Cortona in Rome ; from February to September 2000 she worked as a freelancer for the project “ Ways of the Renaissance” of the Weser Renaissance Museum at Brake Castle in Lemgo . For her dissertation, Verstegen was also awarded the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute , and as its owner she traveled to the Mediterranean region from October 2000 to March 2001 . After her return, she became a research assistant at the Art History Institute of the University of Cologne in April 2001 and helped set up the Prometheus picture archive , where she was responsible for organization, content , communication and legal issues as a project coordinator . Between the 2001/02 winter semester and the 2004 summer semester, she was teaching at the Institute of Art History at the University of Cologne. In April 2004 she became a research assistant at the chair for Christian archeology and art history at the University of Erlangen . Here she was also the deputy women's representative of the Theological Faculty from 2004 to 2008 and women's representative from 2008 to January 2009. In April 2013, he completed his habilitation with the thesis Holy Place - Sacred Space. Continuity and change in the staging of the Herrenorte in Jerusalem . Since the 2013/14 winter semester, Verstegen has been Professor of Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History at the theological faculty of the University of Marburg . Since the 2016/17 winter semester, Verstegen has been professor of Christian archeology and art history at the Theology Department at the University of Erlangen .

Verstegen's research and work focuses on the archeology and art of early Christianity, sacred architecture in late antiquity and the Middle Ages, multi-religious use of space, late antiquity and medieval architectural ornamentation, the hybridization phenomena in the visual culture of early Christianity, and copyright law in art history and archeology. Since November 2005 she has been a member of the editorial team of the internet review journal kunstform , which focuses on late antique, byzantine and early medieval architecture. In addition, Verstegen is a member of the late antiquity and early Middle Ages working groups of the West and South German Association for Antiquity Research and Theory in Archeology of the West and South German Association for Antiquity Research . She also acted as web administrator for the Christian Archeology Working Group from 2004 to 2014, and has been the chair of the working group since 2016.
