Uwe Karsten Groß

Uwe Karsten Groß (born August 30, 1930 in Oranienburg -Eden; † October 17, 2015 in Braunschweig ) was a German organist , interpreter and composer .

Groß studied music with Fritz Heitmann in Berlin from 1949 to 1953, majoring in the organ. After the state examination he worked as a church musician in Berlin. From 1958 to 1976, Groß was cantor of the St. Katharinen congregation in Braunschweig . From 1963 to 1969 he was a part-time organ lecturer at international advanced training courses in Siena and organ teacher at the Braunschweig University of Education (now the Technical University of Braunschweig ). In 1966 he received the music promotion award from the state government of Lower Saxony.

From 1969, Groß taught at the College for Church Music of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia in Herford , which was then under the direction of Wilhelm Ehmann . In 1976, Groß was appointed director of the college with the title of church music director as his successor . During his tenure, he made contacts with other artists and institutions around the world and in 1991 was recognized by the Westphalian University of Church Music. At the same time he was appointed rector and professor.

After his retirement (1994), Groß moved to Braunschweig. In 1995 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his services to international understanding (especially through his contacts in the GDR, Poland and Hungary) .

Uwe Karsten Groß was the youngest son of the sculptor and preacher Wilhelm Groß . He strove for the widely scattered artistic work of his father. Even in his retirement he played regularly at church services, devotions and concerts. He also edited the series Jazz Inspirations for Organ at Bärenreiter-Verlag .

Uwe Karsten Groß died on October 17, 2015 in Braunschweig at the age of 85.
