Václav Chaloupecký

Václav Chaloupecký (born May 12, 1882 in Dětenice , Jičin district , Austro-Hungarian monarchy ; † November 22, 1951 , Okres Jičín , Czechoslovakia ) was a Czech archivist and historian.

Life

Václav Chaloupecký studied history at the Charles University in Prague from 1903 to 1908 . He then did his doctorate with Jaroslav Goll with the dissertation "Jan IV. Z Dražic, poslední biskup pražský". He then worked as a Lobkowitz librarian and archivist in Raudnitz Castle . When the First World War broke out in 1914, he was drafted into the Austrian army . After the end of the war and the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, he was appointed inspector of the Slovak libraries and archives in 1919. At the same time he completed his habilitation at the newly founded Comenius University in Bratislava , which appointed him in 1923 as full professor for the history of Czechoslovakia. 1937–1938 he held the office of dean of the philosophy faculty and for a short time also the rector . In 1938 he returned to Charles University as the successor to the historian Josef Pekař . Now he devoted himself to researching the oldest Bohemian history, including the Christian legend and the national saints Wenceslaus and Adalbert . This activity was ended on November 1, 1939 by the special action in Prague , with which the Czech-speaking universities were closed by the German occupation of the Protectorate . After the war ended in 1945 he was able to resume teaching at Charles University. In 1946 he published a biography of the first Archbishop of Prague, Ernst von Pardubitz .

As early as 1925, Václav Chaloupecký became a corresponding member of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences . In 1932 he became an associate and in 1938 a full member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts . At the beginning of 1951 he was appointed as a member of a commission that was supposed to wind up the former Prague German Academy of Sciences and Arts . On November 22nd J. died in his hometown Dětenice.
