Josef Pekař (born April 12, 1870 in Malý Rohozec , † January 23, 1937 in Prague ) was a Czech historian .

Life

The student of Jaroslav Goll and Antonín Rezek at the Czech Charles University in Prague received his doctorate in philosophy in 1893, taught at the grammar school in Mladá Boleslav (Jungbunzlau) in 1895 and a year later in Prague. In 1896 he worked at the Straka Academy for young Catholic aristocrats . In 1894 he went on a study trip and attended lectures by the historian Friedrich von Bezold at the University of Erlangen and lectures by Heinrich von Treitschke and Eduard Zeller at the University of Berlin . In 1897 he became a lecturer in Austrian history and supplement to this subject at the Czech Charles University in Prague , and in 1902 he became an associate professor and in 1905 a full professor for Austrian history at the Czech Charles University in Prague. The subject of the habilitation thesis was the plot against Field Marshal Wallenstein ( Dějiny Valdštejnského spiknutí 1630–1634 ). As a private lecturer at the Czech Faculty of Philosophy, he represented Professor Antonin Rezek from the summer of 1897 and became co-chair of the historical seminar. In 1904 he initiated the reorganization of the historical club. From 1909 to 1910 Pekař served as dean of the faculty and from 1931 to 1932 rector of the university. In 1935 he rejected the candidacy offered for the office of President of Czechoslovakia .

From 1893 Josef Pekař wrote newspaper articles, from 1898 he worked as editor of the magazine Český časopis historický (Czech historical magazine). In the 1990s he compiled arguments against the authenticity of the Grünberger manuscript and published his habilitation thesis on the Wallenstein conspiracy in 1895. In his scientific publications he dealt with the oldest history in Bohemia , the Hussite period and the events of the 17th and 18th centuries with a broad scientific spectrum . In 1912 he began a scientific dispute with Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk about the meaningful forces in Bohemian history. Pekař contradicted Masaryk, who took the view that the changing religious affiliations played a major role. Pekař himself represented the ethnic-national point of view. His view of the negative assessment of the Hussite Wars and the positive portrayal of the time after the Battle of White Mountain during the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) was later rejected by the ideology of Marxism .
