Vítězslav Gardavský (born October 24, 1923 in Zábřeh near Ostrava , † March 7, 1978 in Prosetín ) was a Czechoslovakian writer, translator and philosopher.

life and work

Gardavský was born in 1923 in Zábřeh, a district of Ostrava, as the son of a teacher couple. In 1934 he entered the archiepiscopal grammar school in Kroměříž , which he completed in 1942 with the Matura . He was then drafted into forced labor in Vienna and Leipzig until the spring of 1945 . From 1945 to 1949 he studied philosophy at the Charles University in Prague , married in 1951 and had two daughters. In 1951 he became a professional soldier and lecturer in Marxism and from 1953 taught at the Philosophical Faculty of the Military Academy in Brno .

In the 1960s he toured abroad and taught at well-known universities in the USA. His last trip abroad took him to the Federal Republic of Germany and England in 1969. After appearing at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno , he was expelled from the Communist Party , the Brno Military Academy and the army in November 1970 . He then worked as a craftsman in a Brno company and as a driver for an agricultural cooperative in Prosetín.

As a representative of Marxism, Gardavský sought a dialogue with non-Marxists and dealt primarily with religious questions. His examination of the God is dead theology under the title God is not quite dead appeared from 1967, initially as a result of articles in the Prague literary magazine Literární noviny . The book saw several editions in Czechoslovakia and Germany and has been translated into other languages, including Japanese. Gardavský varies the saying I believe because it is absurd to I believe although it is absurd. Thus he declares non-belief to be just as irrational as belief.

He translated Der Parasit by Friedrich Schiller , love poems by Friedrich Hölderlin and the scenic biography Hölderlin by Peter Weiss into Czech. His drama Ich, Jakob about the biblical progenitor Jakob was premiered in April 1968 at the State Theater Brno. In 1975, Engel appeared on the point of the sword , a work on the prophet Jeremiah .

In 1978 the State Security Service launched an investigation into Gardavský. He died on March 7, 1978 and was buried in the Brno Central Cemetery.
