Vaccinium membranaceum is a plant from the genus of blueberries ( Vaccinium ) in the family of the Ericaceae (Ericaceae). It is widespread in central and western North America.

description

Vaccinium membranaceum grows as a shrub that reaches heights of 20 to 300 centimeters and can be found in small to large groups. The stem-round to sometimes angular branches of this year have smooth bark or bark that is hairy in lines and yellowish-green to reddish-green in color .

The green leaves are 25 to 50 millimeters long and 11 to 23 millimeters wide, elliptical to ovate. The leaf margin is finely serrated. The underside of the leaf is glandular.

During the flowering period in late spring to early summer, spherical flowers are formed. The green sepals are fused and bare at their base. The white, cream-colored, yellowish-pink or bronze-colored, frosted petals are fused with spherical to jug-shaped and have a length of 3 to 5 millimeters and a diameter of 5 to 7 millimeters. The stamens are bare.

Shiny or dull, black or dark purple, rarely red or white berries with a diameter of 9 to 13 millimeters are formed. The seeds are about 1 mm in size.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

Occurrence

The natural range of Vaccinium membranaceum covers large parts of central and western North America. It extends from British Columbia , Alberta and Ontario in the north to Arizona and California in the south. In the east, the limit of distribution runs through Colorado , South Dakota , Michigan and Ontario.

This species is found mainly in coniferous or mixed conifer forests as well as on rubble heaps at altitudes between 900 and 3500 meters.

use

Vaccinium membranaceum berries are often collected for consumption. For the Indians they were an important source of food. Dried berries served as a winter supply.

The berries are eaten raw or cooked. They are among the best tasting fruits among the “blueberry” species. That is why they are also grown. The medical effects were examined.
