Valchid ( German forest huts , Hungarian Válthid ) is a village in the Sibiu district in Romania . It belongs to the municipality of Hoghilag ( Halvelagen ).
location
Valchid is located roughly in the middle of Transylvania in a southern side valley of the Târnava Mare ( Great Kokel ). The next larger cities are Mediaș (approx. 20 km west) and Sighișoara (approx. 20 km northeast).
history
Valchid was first mentioned in a document in 1317. It was on Königsboden and was a village of the Transylvanian Saxons .
population
The town was shaped for centuries by the German population. In 1850, 642 of the 932 residents were Germans. Their number decreased slowly after the Second World War and rapidly after the revolution of 1989 . In 2002 there were still 684 people living in Valchid, of whom 4 identified themselves as German, 622 as Romanians , 20 as Roma , 31 as Hungarians and 7 as belonging to other nationalities.
traffic
The place is located on a dirt road that branches off the national road ( drum național ) DN 14 running in the Kokeltal and leads to Copşa Mare . Public transport does not affect Valchid (as of 2005). The nearest train station is about 10 km north of the village on the Teiuș – Brașov railway line .
Attractions
- In the center of town is the 1390 built hall church , in the 15th and 16th centuries by towers and walls of fortified church was completed.
