The ship was built in 1961 under construction number 863 on the AG Weser, Seebeck plant in Bremerhaven and delivered to the Norddeutsche Hochseefischerei AG, Bremerhaven. It entered service as the Vikingbank with the fishing license number BX 682.
The keel of the ship was laid on October 25, 1960, the launch took place on February 9, 1961. The ship was completed on May 15, 1961.

On March 16, 1970, the ship was sold to the Unterweser Reederei in Bremen and converted into a research ship for maritime raw material research at the Elsflether shipyard by the end of the year . The new name of the ship became the traditional one of the old Valdivia . In 1973, the ship went to the VTG supply shipping, one year later to the shipping partnership MS Valdivia and 1975 finally to the RF Reederei Community Forschungsschiffahrt in Bremen, which until 1999 Fleet operated . It has been used in various areas of marine geophysics , marine geology , oceanography, and prospecting (especially manganese nodules ). The focus of the raw material exploration was in the central Pacific, in the Red Sea, in Southeast Asia and in sea areas off East and West Africa.
