Valentin Amrhein (born April 1, 1971 in Lübeck ) is a German / Swiss zoologist and professor at the University of Basel as well as a science journalist .

Life

Amrhein, originally from Bonn comes, studied at the University of Basel between 1992 and 1999 Biology . Since 1999 he has been director of the Petite Camargue Alsacienne research station . Amrhein did his doctorate with Heinz Durrer on the nightingale and passed his doctoral examination in 2004. A research stay at the University of Oslo followed . Amrhein has been teaching ornithology , nature conservation biology and statistics at the Zoological Institute of the University of Basel since 2006 . He also works as a science journalist and was Head of Communication at the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences from 2012 to 2016 . Since 2017 he has been editor of the Ornithological Observers magazine at the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach . In 2019, Amrhein published a comment on statistical significance in the journal Nature , which had the highest online attention value of all scientific publications recorded by Altmetric up to this point in time .

Amrhein is married and has three daughters. During school and university he played the violin in various orchestras and chamber music formations .
