Valentin Bauer (born June 22, 1885 in Markt Nordheim , † October 27, 1974 in Bad Kreuznach ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and politics

After completing an apprenticeship in Nordheim as a carpenter, Valentin Bauer went on a hike and found work at BASF . There he managed the company's own wood workshops.

Bauer was involved in the SPD since 1902. From 1920 to 1933 Bauer was a representative of his party on the city council in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . During this time he was also a member of the supervisory board of the municipal housing company GAG in Ludwigshafen. He was then appointed sole director for the company.

Between 1933 and 1945, Bauer was arrested several times for his political commitment. After the war, Bauer was a founding member of the newly founded SPD in the Palatinate. In April 1945, Bauer was appointed to the advisory board of the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein, and he became a member of the city council in 1946. On December 8, 1945, he was appointed mayor of the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein. On May 30, 1955, shortly before his 70th birthday, Bauer resigned from his position. In 1946/47 he was a member of the Advisory State Assembly of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Bauer found his final resting place in the main cemetery in Ludwigshafen .

Honors and commemorations

Valentin Bauer's name in Ludwigshafen today is primarily associated with his work in the reconstruction of the city. In 1955 he became an honorary citizen of Ludwigshafen am Rhein and received the Great Federal Cross of Merit . The Valentin-Bauer-Siedlung in Ludwigshafen has been named after him since 1956 .
