Valentin Schmidt (Cistercian)

Valentin Schmidt , OCist (also Franz Valentin Schmidt ; Czech František Valentin Schmidt ; born January 5, 1863 in Rosenthal ; † March 28, 1927 in Hohenfurt ) was a Cistercian of Hohenfurt Abbey , high school teacher, local researcher , diplomat and archivist .

Life

Valentin Schmidt attended elementary school in his hometown and then the grammar school in Krumau , where he passed the final exam with distinction in 1883. In the same year he entered the Cistercian monastery Hohenfurt as a novice . In 1887 he was ordained a priest and at the same time took his religious vows , taking the religious name Valentin for his first name Franz . Then he was chaplain in Unterhaid and then in Höritz , where he revised the text of the Höritz Passion Play . In 1889 he enrolled at the Karl Ferdinand University in Prague for the subjects of history, geography and German. In 1893 he passed the teaching examination, a year later he received his doctorate in philosophy. From 1895 to 1899 he was the director of the Cistercian high school in Mehrerau near Bregenz , from 1899 to 1901 he taught at the German secondary school in Budweis and then for half a year at the Stiftsgymnasium Melk . As the successor to the Cistercian Willibald Ladenbauer, who was appointed Prior of Hohenfurt, he taught history at the German grammar school in Budweis from 1902 to 1921.

From the school year 1921/22 Schmidt headed the newly established collegiate high school in Hohenfurt. After the death of Prior Willibald Ladenbauer he was appointed monastery archivist in 1926, but died a year later.

Valentin Schmidt wrote numerous works on the history and settlement of South Bohemia and the Bohemian Forest and published several documents. He also wrote numerous articles that appeared in the communications of the Association for the History of Germans in Bohemia .
