Valentin von Massow (Lieutenant Colonel)

Valentin von Massow (born June 25, 1825 in Berlin , † March 12, 1868 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian officer, most recently a lieutenant colonel . From 1857 to 1867 he was adjutant to Prince Albrecht of Prussia , then commander of the 1st Guard Uhlan Regiment until his death .

Life

He was a member of the Pomeranian noble family von Massow and the eldest son of Ludwig von Massow (* 1794, † 1859), minister of the royal house and heir to Steinhöfel and Demnitz .

Massow studied and served as a one-year volunteer with the 2nd Guard Uhlan Regiment in Berlin. After a time as a Landwehr officer, he was transferred to the Guard Dragoon Regiment in 1849 .

Massow was ordered to serve Prince Albrecht of Prussia in 1856 , and from 1857 to 1867 he was his personal adjutant . He accompanied the prince in the campaign in Schleswig-Holstein in 1864 and in the German War in 1866 , in which the prince led the 1st Guard Cavalry Brigade . Massow was promoted further as adjutant, most recently to lieutenant colonel in 1866 . He also received Prussian and foreign awards, such as the Royal Crown Order 3rd Class with Swords in 1866 , the Russian Order of Saint Stanislaus 2nd Class in 1865 and the same 2nd Class with Crown in 1867.

In 1867 Massov's time as adjutant to Prince Albrecht ended. He became the commander of the 1st Guard Uhlan Regiment . In March 1868 Massow died of an illness and was buried in Steinhöfel ; his grave is next to the Steinhöfel church.

Massow was Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John since 1860 .

Marriage and offspring

Valentin von Massow was married to Adelheid Marianne von der Asseburg , (* 1844 in Berlin, † 1912 in Steinhöfel), daughter of the Hofjägermeister Ludwig von der Asseburg , since 1864 .

The couple had three children: The son Valentin von Massow (* 1864; † 1899) became an officer in the German colony of Togo. The daughter Magarethe von Massow (* 1868, † 1945) married Count Friedrich von der Asseburg (1861-1940), Lord of Rinnersdorf, in 1887. Another daughter died young.

After Massow's death, the widow donated the Massow Fideikommiss Steinhöfel and Dallwitz. On December 3, 1884 she married the then lieutenant colonel a. D. Gustav von Kuylenstjerna (* 1817 - † March 15, 1900 in Steinhöfel). In 1900 she sold her son Valentin's legacy of ethnographic objects to the Museum of Ethnology in Leipzig.
