Valérie Maltais (born April 7, 1990 in La Baie ) is a former Canadian short tracker and now a speed skater .

Career

Short track

Before Maltais started the short track at the age of six, she had initially participated in figure skating competitions. She also holds the national junior record over 500 meters and was three-time Canadian junior champion in 2007.

Maltais' first international start took place in January 2006 at the Junior World Championship in Miercurea Ciuc . There she failed in the individual competitions in the semi-finals at the latest, but with the relay she managed to place fourth. A year later, she again took part in the Junior World Championships, but again missed a top 5 placement. But since she achieved good results in national competitions and, among other things, won the silver medal over 1000 meters at the Canadian Championship in 2007, she was overall eighth in the national rankings. Nevertheless, the Canadian Association nominated her for no international race in the next 2007/08 season , but she was Canadian junior champion in the 1,500 meter distance. Although she was only twelfth in the Canadian rankings at the end of the season, Maltais qualified as a junior athlete for the Short Track World Cup 2008/09 , where she immediately reached two third places with the relay. In addition, you get two top ten results in singles.

At the 2012 World Championships in Shanghai, Maltais was world champion in the 3000 m superfinal. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , she won the relay silver, which she succeeded again at the following World Cup in Montreal , when she also won three bronze medals. Two years later, she secured silver at the 2016 Short Track World Championships in Seoul with the 3000 meter relay, which also included Marianne St-Gelais , Audrey Phaneuf and Kasandra Bradette . A short time later, she finished the 1000 meter World Cup in second place in the overall standings. As in the 2013/14 season, she finished fourth in the 1,500 meter standings.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she ran over 1,000 meters in seventh place and over 1,500 meters in 19th place. She ended the 2017/18 World Cup season in fourth place. It was her third fourth place after 2013/14 and 2015/16. At the 2018 Short Track World Championships in Montreal in March , she finished third with the relay behind South Korea and the Netherlands, thus winning her 13th World Championship medal.

Speed skating

For the 2018/19 season, Maltais announced that it would switch to speed skating . She had already trained with the speed skaters from May 2018. At the Canadian Championships in Calgary in October 2018, she won bronze over the 3,000 meters. In addition, she was sixth over the 1,500 meter distance. On December 8, 2018, she made her debut over 1,500 meters at the World Cup in Tomaszów Mazowiecki and finished seventh. A week later she made her debut in Heerenveen over the 3,000 meters and finished in 13th place. At the Canada Cup in January 2019, Maltais won the 1,500 meters. With this she also achieved a starting place at the speed skating single distance world championships 2019 in Inzell . After rather mixed individual results there, she just barely missed a medal in the team pursuit with her teammates Ivanie Blondin and Isabelle Weidemann as fourth. At the speed skating all around world championship 2019 in Calgary , Canada , Maltais reached 17th place.
