Renaturation
From 2019 to 2020 the Valme was renatured over a length of 6.1 kilometers in the village of Ramsbeck . The reason was Directive 2000/60 / EC (Water Framework Directive) , which stipulates that the rivers in Europe should be put in good ecological condition. The measures cost around one million euros. Of this, 90 percent was paid by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the rest by the municipality of Bestwig. Bestwig was also credited with its investment in the form of eco-points , which can then be used for other building measures instead of compensatory measures that are subject to a fee. In the Valme, 24 transverse structures were removed and concrete elements on the bank. At the village square, people were able to access the river directly.
