Vama Veche ( Bulgarian Иланлък ; Gagauz Ilanlâk , Ottoman : Yilanluk ) is the southernmost place on the Romanian coast of the Black Sea, only a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border. It is located in the southeastern Dobruja and in the Constanța district . The village is part of the Limanu Municipality . Not far is the Durankulak-Vama Veche border crossing .

The name Vama Veche means "old customs". The place was given this name in 1913 when, as a result of the Second Balkan War, the southern Dobruja was annexed to Romania and the customs were moved further south in Ecrene (next to Albena ). Despite the return of the southern Dobruja to Bulgaria in 1940, the name remained unchanged.

The place has about 250 inhabitants, mostly Gagauz , whose ancestors founded the settlement in 1811.

Together with the northern neighboring town of May 2, Vama Veche was a meeting place for individual tourists, artists and nonconformists. Meanwhile, Vama Veche has been commercialized by the appeal of that reputation, but camping on the beach is still allowed. In summer, live bands perform almost every evening and the pubs are usually open around the clock. Part of the beach is set up for nudist bathers.

In contrast to most other Romanian seaside resorts, there are no large hotels in Vama Veche, but private pensions. In recent years some new holiday villas and guest houses have been built, but the construction of large hotel complexes has been prevented by a citizens' initiative. In the vicinity of the place, at the foot of the steep coast, there are interesting diving spots.

A large jazz festival is held every August. The well-known Romanian rock band Vama Veche named themselves after the place.

Vama Veche can only be reached individually or by minibus from Mangalia station .
