Systematics and botanical history

This orchid was described in 1928 by Johannes Jacobus Smith on the basis of two specimens collected by L. Rutten in 1918. The name seranica refers to the island Seram, also written “Seran”, as a place of discovery.

According to Portères , it is similar to the Vanilla abundiflora and Vanilla borneensis species found on Borneo . Soto Arenas and Cribb mention Vanilla abundiflora as a related species as well as other species around Vanilla kinabaluensis . Within the genus Vanilla , Vanilla seranica is classified in the subgenus Xanata and there in the section Tethya , which contains all species of the paleotropic plants .
