Varahagiri Venkata Giri ( Telugu వరాహగిరి వేంకటగిరి , Hindi वराहगिरी वेंकट गिरी , pronunciation ? / I ; born August 10, 1894 in Brahmapur ; † June 24, 1980 in Madras , Tamil Nadu ) was an Indian politician and President of the Republic of India from 1969 to 1974 . Audio file / audio sample

Giri was in a Telugu - Brahmin family in Berhampur, in today's Odisha (part time British India ) born. His father was a lawyer. Both parents were active in the Indian autonomy and independence movement. Giri received his first education at the local Khallikote College . In 1913 he went to Ireland (then part of the United Kingdom ) and studied there at University College Dublin from 1913 to 1916 . His contacts with the Irish independence movement Sinn Féin and Éamon de Valera led to his being expelled to India in 1916 after the Easter Rising . There he worked in the trade union movement and for the independence of India. After India's independence, he was high commissioner in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) from 1947 to 1951 and later governor in Uttar Pradesh (1957–1960), Kerala (1960–1965) and Mysore (1965–1967). In 1967 he was elected Vice President of India . 1969 after the death of Zakir Hussain , he was on 16 August 1969 with the support of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and their supporters in the post of Indian president against the official candidate of the Congress Party leadership elected .
