The VARD AS is a Norwegian shipbuilding group with ten shipyards in Norway, Romania, Brazil and Vietnam with approximately 10,000 employees (March 2015). The company was formed in January 2013 from significant parts of the Korean STX Europe and STX OSV. The Italian parent company , Fincantieri has almost doubled with this acquisition, revenue and the number of employees and was the fourth largest shipyard in the world.

In February 2002 the shipbuilding activities of the Norwegian groups Aker ASA and Kværner were bundled under the management company Aker Kværner Yards AS in Oslo. In 2004 the Aker Yards ASA shipbuilding group was formed under new ownership and was listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

In June 2006, the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard (Saint-Nazaire) of the Alstom group was taken over. Aker Yards has been self-employed since March 2007. The 40.1% stake previously held by Aker ASA in Aker Yards was sold and became a free float .

In October 2007, the South Korean shipyard group STX Shipbuilding bought 39.2% of the shares in Aker Yards. The shipbuilding company was listed under the name Aker Yards ASA in the OBX Index on the Oslo Stock Exchange from 2004 to 2009 . Aker Yards became the largest shipbuilding company in Europe with 19 shipyards.

In November 2008 Aker Yards changed its name to STX Europe . The turnover in 2008 was 31.5 billion Norwegian kroner . As of December 31, 2008, STX controlled 93.87% of the shares in STX Europe and acquired sole ownership in 2009. On February 11, 2009, STX Europe was delisted from the Oslo Stock Exchange .

In July 2009, STX Europe sold its stake in Wadan Yards . Because of the high losses of the parent company STX, almost all STX Europe shipyards have been sold to other companies since 2012. STX Norway and STX OSV were sold to Fincantieri in January 2013 and renamed VARD AS . Fincantieri currently holds 55.63% of the shares in VARD. (March 2015)

Anchor handling tug Far Samson

The Norwegians are specialists workboats for the offshore - oil production . The anchor-handling tug Far Samson , with a bollard pull of 423  tons , is one of the most powerful tugs ever built. The Romanian VARD shipyards usually deliver hulls .
