Varian's War - A Forgotten Hero (Original Title: Varian's War ) is an American-British-Canadian drama film directed by Lionel Chetwynd from 2001 .

action

During the Second World War , the American Varian Fry tried to save the Jews who were threatened in Germany . When he realizes that it is impossible to save all Jews, he concentrates his efforts on the intellectuals in order to at least save the cultural soul of Europe from the criminal Hitler regime.

Fry collects donations in the USA and travels to Marseille to enable the intellectual Jews living there to escape to the USA. As soon as he arrived in Vichy France, he had to realize that unexpected obstacles were waiting for him: the threatened intellectuals refused to be helped, the American embassy refused any support, the Vichy government worked together with the SS and refused all Jews Leaving the country and instead of helping the intellectuals to flee, Fry, out of pity, spends his money on supporting the Jews stranded and trapped in Marseille. After being invited to the German headquarters, Fry realizes the situation and concentrates in his work on creating a legend in order to camouflage his actual concern. Ultimately, he succeeds with this mixture of adaptation and resistance and can help Marc Chagall, Heinrich Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger and others to escape across the Spanish border and ultimately to the USA at the first attempt.
