The virus genus Varicellovirus comprises several virus species in the Herpesviridae family that are found in mammals . They are phylogenetically closely related within the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae and strictly adapted to their respective hosts . In contrast to the genus Simplexvirus , the varicelloviruses reproduce in cell culture only in host-specific cell types and only in a few animal species. The name is derived from the type species of the genus, the varicella zoster virus in humans. The multiplication of varicelloviruses takes place in epithelial cells and they all persist in the nervous tissue of their respective host. Typical of varicelloviruses is their ability to spread throughout the entire body, which can lead to exanthemic diseases of the skin, mucous membranes and infections of internal organs.
