Pastor ibid, founder of the so-called Varnhagen blood parish in Iserlohn, d. H. a pastor's post that was occupied until the 19th century by a son of the family who was qualified for the priesthood. He is the progenitor of the entire Varnhagen family, which subsequently branched out very strongly, v. a. in Westphalia (Iserlohn, Dortmund and Brilon), but also via Altena to Korbach and spread further to overseas. The Varnhagen family mother and first wife of Johann Varnhagen was probably a sister of Gotthard von Ketteler , Duke of Courland, named Anna, who is only mentioned in Fahne (1848) and v. a. does not appear in more recent genealogical works. It is possible that she was also an illegitimate daughter of Ketteler, but precise details are missing.
  • Johann Bernhard Varnhagen , 17th century, "popular in Sweden", as it is called in an old Varnhagen genealogy; because he was the body medic of King Gustav II Adolf and Queen Christina I of Sweden .

Daughter offspring

Since the genealogy of the entire Varnhagen family goes back to the 16th century, the daughter progeny is also correspondingly expanded. In this context, reference should be made to the interweaving of the Varnhagen in the female line.

Johann Adolph Varnhagen (* 1645) was mayor and doctorate in Altena. His daughter Anna Maria Varnhagen was married to Eberhard Schmidt from Altena , whose mother was probably also a born Varnhagen from Iserlohn. Their son was Johann Adolf Schmidt, who, after the early death of his father, was sent to his uncle, the pharmacist Johann Moritz Varnhagen (* 1687), to learn the "apothecary art". In the Varnhagen household, however, tensions appeared afterwards, as the aunt saw young Schmidt as competition for her own children. Schmidt founded the Hirsch Pharmacy in Korbach, which was owned by the family until the 20th century. Schmidt was married twice, his first marriage to Friederike Freiin Forstmeister von und zu Gelnhausen . A granddaughter from this first marriage was the teacher and writer Wilhelmine Halberstadt . From the second marriage of Johann Adolf Schmidt came a daughter who in turn is the ancestral mother of the Waldecker Varnhagen, as two of her daughters married Varnhagen cousins. Her descendants include a. the Visconde de Porto Seguro, Hermann Varnhagen, rector of the University of Erlangen, and Hermann Kümmell , co-founder of the Hamburg University, first dean of the medical faculty and rector there.
