The Vauzeichen-Eckflügelspanner ( Macaria wauaria ), also called Currant Spanner or Brown V , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the Spanner family (Geometridae).

features

The wingspan of the moth is 22 to 30 millimeters. All wings have a mostly light gray to purple-gray basic color. The apex is slightly angular. There are four dark brown spots on the front edge, the second of which is extended from the inside with a distinctive V-shaped angular line. The hind wings show a slightly darkened fringe. The antennae of the males are combed short on both sides.

The elongated oval egg is initially green in color, which later changes to brown-red. It is provided with an irregular polygonal network and shows small white warts at the corners.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are transversely folded and initially have a greenish or bluish color. Before pupation, they take on a purple-brown color. They are provided with black, bristle point warts. The back line is dark and lined with white, the side stripes are wide yellow.

Doll

The doll is very slender and red-brown in color. At the end of the cremaster it is forked briefly.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The Vauzeichen corner wing spanner occurs from Morocco through Europe to the Amur region as well as to Kamchatka and Central Asia. The northernmost distribution area is Lapland . There are also occurrences in Labrador . The species inhabits hedge areas, forest edges, orchards, and parklands. It can also be found increasingly in orchards close to settlements and can be described as a cultural follower or cultural companion. In the mountains it can still be found at altitudes of 1700 meters.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly in one generation in June and July. You visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars live from April to June and feed on the leaves of various fruit bushes. The forage plants include:

Pupation takes place on or in the ground. The species overwinters as an egg.

Danger

The species occurs in all German federal states and is listed on the red list of endangered species as not endangered.
