Velhagen & Klasing
Velhagen & Klasing was a German book publisher based in Bielefeld and Leipzig .
history
In 1833 August Velhagen founded a publishing bookstore in Bielefeld. Two years later, his school friend August Klasing joined.
The main focus of the publisher was initially on theological specialist literature and popular religious fiction . In 1864 a branch was founded in Leipzig in which the family magazine “ Daheim ” appeared. The Geographische Anstalt Velhagen & Klasing was affiliated to this branch in 1873 . The publisher's focus was now on geographical works, atlases (including Putzger's historical world atlas ), illustrated monographs (“artist monographs”, “monographs on world history”, etc.), magazines , historical works and school books. Since 1886 the widespread illustrated "Velhagen & Klasings monthly books" appeared. Since 1882 the publishing house also owned the Stubenrauchsche Buchhandlung (with school book publisher) in Berlin . Ottilie Wildermuth and Henriette Davidis were among the successful authors of the 19th century who published with Velhagen & Klasing (for example in the magazine Daheim ) .
In the time of National Socialism, the publisher remained true to the line and published z. B. the leading anti-Semitic propagandist Johann von Leers .
The publishing house was taken over by Cornelsen Verlag in 1954 . The parts of the company located in the GDR came to VEB Tourist Verlag .
August Klasing's son Johannes Klasing founded Delius Klasing Verlag in 1911 , which was formally independent.
