The Velká Deštná (German Deschneyer Großkoppe ) is 1115 m above sea level. M. the highest mountain in the Eagle Mountains in the Czech Republic .

Location and surroundings

The mountain rises in the central part of the Adlergebirge main ridge immediately east of the eponymous place Deštné v Orlických horách ( Deschney ). The municipality of Orlické Záhoří lies to the east in the Wild Eagle Valley , and to the north (in Poland) is the small resort town of Zieliec ( Grunwald ). On the main hiking trail there is a small refuge, which is managed on weekends, and a lookout tower on the summit. On the northern shoulder - directly on the ridge - is the small nature reserve Jelení lázeň , to the northeast at the foot of the mountain is the much larger Trčkov National Nature Reserve .

history

At the end of the 19th century there was a wooden observation tower on the summit. Renewed several times, the tower was finally demolished at the end of the 1970s due to its dilapidation.

In the 1980s, the forest in the summit area almost completely died off as a result of acid rain . A reforestation took place afterwards with low-growing mountain pines , and later again with spruces . In 1992 scouts built an eight-meter-high viewing platform - which was later renewed - existed until 2010.

From May 2019, a new lookout tower was built on the summit according to a design by the architect Lukáš Svoboda as a steel structure with wooden cladding. It was officially opened on October 26, 2019. The viewing platform is 17.34 meters high, with the wind vane the tower is exactly 22 meters high. The cladding made of vertical, diagonal and horizontal squared timber symbolizes the extreme weather conditions on the summit: calm, wind, storm, hurricane together with rain (déšť) and snow.

The mountain panorama includes seen clockwise from the north on: Giant Mountains with Giant Mountain foothills, Falk Mountains , Table Mountains , Owl Mountains , Golden Mountains , Habelschwerdter Mountains and Śnieżnik Mountains .

Paths to the summit

The red marked ridge path of the Eagle Mountains “Jiráskova cesta” runs over the summit area of the mountain. The best starting point for climbing the mountain is the Šerlich ( Schierlich ) saddle . A green marked hiking trail leads from Luisino Údolí ( Luisenthal ) up the mountain. The summit can be reached on foot in around an hour via both routes.
