Venus in Pelz (original title: Venus in Furs ) is a 1994 film based in the Netherlands based on the novella Venus in Pelz by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch . The Dutch independent filmmakers Victor Nieuwenhuijs and Maartje Seyferth directed it .

The film ran in 1994 in competition at the Dutch Film Festival and at the São Paulo International Film Festival . It was also shown at the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, where it was awarded the Prize for Creativity and Professionalism.
The film was released in the Netherlands on March 16, 1995. In Germany, the film was also shown in theaters, and the film was also released on November 1, 1999 on DVD with subtitles.
criticism
The film-dienst described the film as a “thematically true to work adaptation”. The film develops "pictorial tableaus that correspond to the described ritual and emphasize the importance of fantasy for masochism". Occasionally the “cultural-historical commentary overshoots the mark”.
The film website kino.de spoke of a “stylized, modern version” of the novel, “which introduced the concept of masochism into the cultural debate”. What was supposed to be "anti-patriarchal and sexually liberal" in the Luggi-Waldleitner production with Laura Antonelli from 1968 has "given way to pure fantasy with extreme values" today. The “well-composed black and white photography that goes its own shadowy path between Helmut Newton and Robert Mapplethorpe” attracts attention “which the erotic rituals do not consistently achieve”.
