Association against animal factories (Switzerland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Verein gegen Tierfabriken Schweiz (VgT) is a Swiss animal welfare organization. It is domiciled in Tuttwil . It was founded in 1989 by Erwin Kessler , who has been President and full-time managing director ever since. According to its own information, the association now has around 35,000 members. Since April 2007 the VgT sees itself as a party.

history

In 1989, Erwin Kessler, disappointed by the Swiss Animal Welfare Association (STS) because, in his opinion, was limited to cats and dogs, founded the association against animal factories. He put farm animal protection at the center of the association's work, and later also laboratory animal protection .

Conflict with Liechtenstein

In November 1992 the VgT distributed leaflets in Liechtenstein directed against the princely intensive pig farming in Austria with around 10,000 animals. The accusation: The pigs are exposed there to cruel keeping conditions. These leaflet campaigns were stopped by the police. The VgT reacted with further actions, such as the dropping of over 1000 leaflets with the help of a model helicopter directly above the Vaduz castle of Prince Hans-Adam II.

Dispute over commercial

In 1994, the VgT wanted to show a commercial on Swiss television calling for people to eat less meat. Swiss television rejected the broadcast on the grounds that it was political advertising. In 2001, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg finally supported the VgT's call for freedom of expression in the final instance. When Erwin Kessler wanted to write in the opening credits of the film that Swiss television actually did not want to broadcast this report, a new trial took place. In 2009, the large chamber of the Human Rights Court supported the position of the VgT after a renewed request for a revision by the Federal Department of Justice. From January 27 to 29, 2010 the commercial was finally broadcast on Swiss television after a total of 16 years of legal proceedings.

In December 2014, the VgT again placed an advertisement against meat consumption and for veganism . Swiss television saw no legal basis to refuse to broadcast.

Methods

The members are required to report any irregularities to the board so that it can take action. Primarily in so-called animal factories , i. H. Farms with intensive animal husbandry , secretly photographed or filmed, which regularly brings the organization the accusation of trespassing . President Erwin Kessler defines his VgT as non-violent.

The members of the VgT regularly write letters to the editor. Mainly in the Thurgauer Zeitung and the St. Galler Tagblatt , but also in the NZZ .

The VgT carries out numerous stand campaigns, for example in connection with a voting campaign against a Wiler city council or a distribution campaign against the sale of fur at Mode Weber in St. Gallen and Wil.

The VgT has been running an in-house magazine since 1993, the "VgT-Nachrichten". VgT has this magazine distributed in large editions at irregular intervals throughout the country. In December 1999 the Swiss Post refused to accept such an order on the grounds that it did not want to damage its own reputation. However, before the Swiss Federal Supreme Court , Kessler successfully fought for the right to have the post delivered to all households as unaddressed bulk mail.
