Verica Trstenjak

Verica Trstenjak (born December 9, 1962 ) is a Slovenian law scholar and university professor of European law. From 2006 to 2012 she was Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg , from 2004 to 2006 a judge at the General Court of the European Union .

Professional career (beginnings)

She passed her law degree in 1987 and received her doctorate from the Law Faculty of the University of Ljubljana in 1997 . Between 1994 and 1996 she was Head of the Legal Service and between 1996 and 2000 she was State Secretary in the Ministry of Research and Technology. In 2000 she became Secretary General of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.

She has also worked with non-governmental organizations in Slovenia and on the draft law on foundations. Between 1997 and 2000 she was a member of Working Group 17, which was responsible for the accession negotiations with the EU.

Academic activity

Verica Trstenjak completed her doctoral studies at the University of Zurich , at the Institute for Comparative Law at the University of Vienna , at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law and at the Free University of Amsterdam . In 1996 she became associate professor for legal theory and private law and in 2006 full professor (venia legendi) for civil and European law.

She was also visiting professor at the University of Vienna and Freiburg ( University of Freiburg ) at the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg and at the Universities of Heidelberg , Bonn, Salzburg, Zurich, Liechtenstein, Amsterdam (University of Amsterdam), Luxembourg and Ferrara. She also gave various guest lectures outside the EU at the Universities of Sydney, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. Until 2006 she was a member of the Study Group on a European Civil Code.

She has authored more than 300 legal articles and numerous books on European and private law; At the same time, she has given lectures at numerous conferences in Slovenia and abroad (including conferences on the Common Frame of Reference - Münster, Osnabrück, Trier; Luxembourg: European Legal Conference 2011; Trier: Annual Conference of the Society for Comparative Law 2011; Berlin: Humboldt University, 2012 ; Salzburg: 24th European Notarial Days, 2012; Barcelona: European Legal Days 2013; Vienna: General Reporter at IACL - International Academy of Comparative Law, 2014; Amsterdam: Keynote Speaker at the International Conference of Consumer Law, 2015).

She is a lecturer for master’s courses at the University of Luxembourg (Litigation in EU Intellectual Property Rights until 2013) and at the Evropska pravna fakulteta in Nova Gorica / Slovenia (European civil law, comparative law and major legal systems, jurisdiction of the European Union) and at the University of Vienna ( since 2015) true.

After her mandate at the European Court of Justice ended, in 2013 she was appointed professor for European law at the University of Vienna, Faculty of Law (until 2018). She is also a lecturer at the Universities of Ljubljana and Maribor. She also teaches at the summer schools in Salzburg (University of Salzburg), Strobl (University of Vienna) and Alpbach (Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck).

In 2012 she was appointed as External Scientific Member of the new Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law. Since 2017 she has been a member of the Management and Executive Board of the FRA - European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and of the Advisory Committee (a kind of arbitration tribunal) of the international law organization Energy Community (since 2015).

From July 7, 2004 to October 6, 2006 she worked as a judge at the Court of First Instance of the European Union, and from October 7, 2006 to November 28, 2012 she was Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
