Stranger Speedwell ( Veronica peregrina )

description

The foreign speedwell grows as an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of between 5 and 30 cm. The upright stem , usually branched in the lower part, is glabrous ( Veronica peregrina subsp. Peregrina ) to scattered glandular-downy hair ( Veronica peregrina subsp. Xalapensis ).

The bare, somewhat bluish-green leaves are elongated-elliptical or obverse-ovoid in shape. They are entire or notched-serrated and three to five times as long as they are wide. The upper leaves are usually narrower and almost spatulate.

The foreign speedwell blooms mainly in the months April to June. The flowers stand together in terminal, moderately elongated, racemose inflorescences. The bracts are several times longer than the flowers. The hermaphrodite flowers are 3 to 5 mm in diameter. The crown is bluish or white and usually has no stripes.

The capsule fruit is round to heart-shaped, somewhat puffy and completely bare. It is surmounted by the chalice.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 52.

Occurrence

The Foreign Speedwell comes from the mountainous areas of Central and South America and has a sub-oceanic tendency to spread. The foreign honorary award can now also be found in Europe, Australia and East Asia.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Veronica peregrina occurs absent-mindedly or rarely. In some areas, for example in southwest Germany, it has already become naturalized and can be found quite often.

The foreign price of honor grows in small sedge societies, on banks, ditches, in fields and on roadsides. It usually prefers damp, heavy loam or clay soils . It occurs in Central Europe in societies of the associations Bidention tripartitae, Agropyro-Rumicion, Nanocyperion and in those of the order Convolvuletalia sepium.

Systematics

One can distinguish the following subspecies:

  • Veronica peregrina L. subsp. peregrina
  • Veronica peregrina subsp. xalapensis (Kunth) Pennell : It occurs in Slovenia.
