action

Gunnar is a good-natured but also extremely clumsy literary critic and quits his job to help rebuild in ruined Berlin. In his kindness, he thanks a Stockholm magazine for the loyalty and opportunity. With the last tip, Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren rejected, he says goodbye and he and his book Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus by Ludwig Wittgenstein and the realization that nothing is as it seems, by train on to Berlin. He plans to learn something more tangible there and join the mason trade .

Henry is a Jewish doctor who converted to Catholicism and now wants to marry his lover Marie. His previous wife Karin stands in his way. But the plan is quickly made that his lover intends to kill his wife with the help of overdosed antidepressants on the non-stop train to Berlin. The mistress is difficult to convince to implement the plan of the married Henry. So Henry, rather by accident, is forced to support her in the murder by driving in the black .

During the train ride, Gunnar tirelessly helps all his fellow men around him and only manages to attract the anger of his fellow travelers through his countless mishaps. In this way he manages that the soldier suffers several fractures, burns, blindness and ultimately loses his legs as a result of his misfortunes, while he attracts the anger of the conductor and dissuades a devout nun from the faith. Meanwhile, Marie has her doubts and can only be persuaded by Henry to surrender as a supposed victim for an ambush so that Henry can kill her from behind with a high-dose syringe. But Karin was informed, and both women overpower Henry, only to throw him off the moving train. What remains is a severed finger and the murder weapon, which of course is found by the clumsy Gunnar. When he picks it up, he is caught by the conductor and other passengers and unfortunately accused of murder. Meanwhile, Karin and Marie fell in love.

Arrived in Berlin, Gunnar is taken away. In 1961, 16 years after the incident on the train, Gunnar is a prisoner in Berlin and helps build the Berlin Wall as a bricklayer.

criticism

The film received rather mixed to negative reviews.

Jan-Olov Andersson from Aftonbladet , for example, regretted that the story was not that interesting despite a few surprises (Synd att hans historia inte är riktigt lika intressant, även om den bjuder på en och annan överraskning.) . The film is also not really funny and rather reminds of the Ethan and Joel Coen films (Snarare är det kanske en film för dem som gillar bröderna Joel och Ethan Coens filmer.) . However, the effects are impressive (Men mycket imponerar. Alla effekter.) .

The criticism on corren.se also criticized the story, including the endless dialogues (ändlösa dialoger) and that everything was too predictable (väl förutsägbar) . However, the film gets better towards the end, because it increases the pace, brings all the threads together and the thriller elements become visible (Mot slutet blir det bättre igen, tempot höjs, trådar knyts samman och thrillerstämningen förtätas.) . And the optics of the film was also praised, the ("Skenbart" är också en ovanligt snygg film.) .

"A black humor and style-conscious homage to the classics of the railway genre, which unfolds its treasure trove of quotes somewhat smugly and sometimes appears more like a collection of running gags."

“Conspiracy in the Berlin Express” is a nice comedy that slowly runs out of breath in the last third, but offers all sorts of small surprises and unfortunately a somewhat artificial ending. Anyway, tension is only built up to a limited extent, but in terms of genre it is a logical conclusion. "

"In this black and white film, the viewer can neither estimate the further course of the plot nor the intentions of the protagonists and so Wittgenstein's thesis that nothing is as it seems is brought to him in an extremely entertaining way."
