The Versfest Berlin ( spelling : versfest berlin) is an international literature festival that the Peter Weiss Foundation for Art and Politics held for the first time in March 2017. With Jacqueline Woodson , Sarah Crossan , Carol Ann Duffy and Franz Hohler some of the world's most important poets who also write for young readers appeared.
overview
The festival's event centers were the Literature Forum in the Brecht House and the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin. Other events took place at the Deutsches Theater Berlin and the Grips Theater , among others . The program consisted of premiere readings and workshops. Various specials were also organized, including the Unique Poetry exhibition , a retrospective on James Krüss , an opening speech by Jacqueline Woodson and a poetry master class . According to the organizers, the aim was to reduce the “great gap between young people and poetry”. The festival was funded by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds , was under the patronage of Jan Wagner and took place under the direction of Christoph Rieger .

Unique poetry
As part of the festival, the undoped Unique Poetry award for special poetry, which is also aimed at young readers, was presented by the guests of the festival. The following books were awarded:
Juror | Award-winning book | Justification of the juror |
---|---|---|
Synne Lea | "Alfabet / Alphabet" (2001) by Inger Christensen | "Still is the first poetry book I turn to every time I am in need of comfort and courage." |
Steven Herrick | “Come On Everybody” (2012) by Adrian Mitchell | "When I first read Adrian Mitchell's words, 'Most people ignore most poetry, because most poetry ignores most people', I knew I'd found a creed for poetry." |
Edward van de Vendel | »Dag Rots« (2001) by Kees Spiering | “A heartfelt rendition of poetry about a broken love. There is hurt in every line, as much as beauty. It's as raw as it is precise - a little known gem in Dutch poetry. " |
Franz Hohler | "The great Wilhelm Busch Album" (1959) by Wilhelm Busch | "As a child, the verses and drawings in it were my first encounter with satire." |
Uwe-Michael Gutzschhahn | »My happiness lives here« (2012) by Edward van de Vendel and Natalie Tornai | "A book from which I could only read the pictures, the poems were written in a different language and we had to recompose them from the pictures and fill the pages - an ideal poetic process." |
Lan Lan | "Hu Sheng Hua Ji" (1999) by Hong Yi | "A wonderful book encouraging respect and benevolence toward all life." |
Sarah Crossan | "Out Of The Dust" (1997) by Karen Hesse | "A pitch perfect verse novel about growing up in desperate times." |
Carol Ann Duffy | "Poetry in the Making" (1967) by Ted Hughes | "A book that looks as closely at poetry as a botanist looks at a flower." |
Jacqueline Woodson | "The Crossover" (2014) by Kwame Alexander | "This novel in verse is at once intriguing, thoughtful and surprising. Loved it. " |
Anushka Ravishankar | "The Right Kind Of Dog" (2013) by Adil Jussawalla | "An intellectual and aesthetic delight, because it deals with issues of growing up, like identity and the desire to fit in, with depth and sensitivity and in utterly beautiful verse." |
