Paul Merwart , also Paweł Merwart (born March 25, 1855 in Marianowka , Cherson Governorate , Russian Empire ; † May 8, 1902 in Saint-Pierre , Martinique ), was a French history , genre and portrait painter and illustrator .

Merwart, one of four sons of the professor and composer Joseph Merwart (1824–1890) and his wife Pauline (Pawlova) Fiszer (1830–1915), grew up in Lemberg , which was then part of Galicia and thus part of the Austrian Empire . The brothers were the Austrian writer Karl Merwart (1852–1922) and the French colonial official Émile Merwart (1869–1960). After finishing school, he first studied technical subjects at the Technical Universities of Vienna and Graz . After he was wounded in a duel, he went to Italy to recover , where he decided to pursue an artistic career. He began his training as a painter at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Daniel Penther (1837–1887) and in Munich (1876). In 1877 he made a study visit to Düsseldorf . Then he moved on to Paris . From 1877 to 1884 he was a student of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts under Henri Lehmann and Isidore Pils . In 1879 Merwart was represented for the first time in the Salon de Paris . After graduating, he became a French citizen. He married Jeanne Joséphine de Witt (1851–1901). The marriage remained childless. He worked as an illustrator for the newspapers Le Monde illustré , L'Illustration and L'Univers illustré . He also worked as a correspondent in Austria-Hungary and Russia. Through the mediation of his brother Émile, an influential colonial official, he received the title of colonial painter in 1896 and the title of Peintre Officiel de la Marine in 1899/1900 . As such, he toured French colonies in Asia, Africa (1897: Senegal , French Sudan ) and South America (1901/1902: French Guiana ). When he was in Saint-Pierre in Martinique on May 8, 1902, he was the victim of the volcanic eruption of the Montagne Pelée .
